Lulu James

RCA

WE SAY

We first featured Tyneside's then-unsigned Lulu James back in November 2011, when bloggers were rightly falling over themselves to heap praise upon the soulful, Mary J Blige-meets-James Blake post-dubstep of Rope Mirage. Now signed to RCA via Black Butter, her classy latest offering Closer is A-listed at BBC 6Music and Amazing Radio, attracting support from Annie Mac, Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq and MistaJam among others. Adding her name to a new wave of British soul sirens with a support slot to Jessie Ware and Laura Mvula at Shepherd's Bush Empire, Lulu has confirmed her first headline show at Birthdays on April 11, with festival appearances including Lovebox and Bestival - as well as support dates with Rudimental - to follow. Not so much one-to-watch as one-not-to-miss. Video.

London gig: Thursday 11 April, Birthdays, Dalston
