Batches & Cookies
Lizzo feat. Sophia Eris
Totally Gross National Product
WE SAY
The flurry of media this month for Detroit MC Lizzo, on tour in the UK with Har Mar Superstar, has sometimes resembled a breathless TV sports pundit attempting to keep pace with an unstoppable marathon runner. Lizzo first powered into our sight lines - okay, Twitter feed - a couple of weeks ago when 6Music's Lauren Laverne began what is fast becoming a one-woman campaign to put her on the map in the UK. Props then to the Guardian's Paul Lester who, it turns out, had tipped Lizzo a month previously without our noticing, drawing spot-on comparisons with the feisty fayre of Queen Latifah or Salt & Pepa. Quickly added to the 6Music B-list, Batches & Cookies scored 27 out of 30 on Steve Lamacq's Roundtable - apparently the highest of the year - while Zane Lowe made it a Next Hype and even Radio 4's Loose Ends invited her to perform. Press from the NME to Time Magazine is piling on the plaudits for Lizzobangers, her debut album out on December 2 which is daring, funny, clever and, to judge from our own listening the past week, more than up to the job of delivering quality like this well into next year. A late but worthy addition to our watchlist 2014.
