Julie Fowlis
WE SAY
Winning Best Folk Singer at the 2008 Radio 2 Folk Awards, Julie Fowlis made good on her 2006 award for Best Emerging Artist. It's quite an achievement for someone singing in Scottish Gaelic, a language spoken by just 60,000 people. Her media profile to-date looks like an impressive list of TV and radio appearances, including Later With Jools Holland and R2 sessions. Her album 'Cuilidh' was released last year to widespread praise, including 4 and 5 star reviews in Time Out and The Guardian. While non-Gaelic speakers are relying on her really interesting rhythmic voice, her evocative music has and will appeal to many. Watch her being interviewed with KT Tunstall at the Folk Awards here.
