20 year old Danish singer-songwriter Hugo Helmig has been making quite a name for himself in Denmark and Germany over the last year with his catchy and moving guitar-led pop songs. His previous two singles, debut offering Please Don’t Lie (25m streams) and follow up Wild (13m streams), topped the airplay charts in his native Denmark while in Germany they reached no.3. He also picked up two GAFFA Awards for Best New Name and Hit of the Year for Please Don’t Lie. Released last Friday and featuring on 24 Spotify New Music Friday (including a cover feature in Denmark) playlists, Young Like This is a beautifully uplifting ode about being in the present and enjoying life. Produced and written by Hugo with his usual collaborator Emil Falk, it’s a gloriously vibrant piece of guitar pop, opening with gently strummed chords and then blossoming into a real sing-a-long gem. At the start of March, he will be releasing his debut album, Juvenile, before heading off on 22 date tour across Denmark and GSA, having already played over 70 shows in the Nordics and GSA last year alone. With bags of talent and insanely infectious songs, Hugo has the potential to become the next rising Danish star to crossover to the UK and further afield. A guitar-pop anthem.
