Somebody That I Used To Know
Gotye ft Kimbra
WE SAY
Record of the Day's Record of the Year: Featured: July 26 2011.
In the last 2011 Record of the Day magazine (published December 15) we asked our members of staff to choose their featured Record of the Year. The resounding winner came from Gotye, who we have no doubt will continue to excel in 2012, here's why:
Joe Taylor (RotD consultant): We featured Somebody That I Used To Know back when Gotye was unsigned for the UK. A proper song with shades of The Human League’s Don’t You Want Me, a fantastic video, and surely a big UK hit for 2012.
Pete Jarrett (RotD music editor): The interaction between Wally aka Gotye and Kimbra is incredibly moving, fun and deserving of the viral spread it has received. This track has legs and whilst it will finally get its official release on Communion in February, it will still be on my playlist when I get divorced in my mid 50s fighting over my Friends Crush 7” and my wife Shakira’s Monster Mash ltd 12”.
James Barton (RotD consultant): Picking my outstanding song featured this year is pretty easy. Hands down it is the haunting, beautiful Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye. However, since recently signing to Island Records, the track won’t be getting an official release until early next year so I’m storing it up to use again for 2012’s end of year reviews. With 22 million YouTube views and counting let’s hope there is enough of an undiscovered audience out there for it to become the hit it thoroughly deserves to be.
To tip us off about a future hit for 2012 and beyond, drop our music editor an email with a track together with some blurb. Alternatively a Soundcloud or Facebook link is just as good.
