Did We Live Too Fast
Got A Girl
WE SAY
After meeting during a cast dinner for the 2010 cult film Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, hip hop producer Dan 'The Automator' Nakamura (famed for his work on the brilliant Gorillaz debut album) hooked up with actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead to form the duo Got A Girl. He'd been working on the movie score and she'd been playing the role of Ramona Flowers. Their musical collaboration came about from their mutual adoration of classy, almost cinematic chic French pop from the 60s; the kind of thing that the great Serge Gainsbourg would create back in the day with enigmatic vocals from Jane Birkin, all drenched in swirling strings and exuding glamour. This featured track is the opener from the wonderfully titled I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now, which is due next month and there are UK dates promised for later in the autumn. The black and white video (directed by Hope Larson) tells the story of a woman whose partner doesn't seem to love her anymore and goes to a rather extreme measure to win him back, simply because of some reading matter she finds secretly stashed away by him. This is hip cocktail-lounge cool, reminiscent of an age we all wish we'd been around to fully indulge in, with a stash of cash and a trendy but superficial social circle for full effect.
