WE SAY
In August of this year a bizarre, almost unrecognisable but oddly intriguing choral version of Death Grips' cranium-mangling hip-hop anti-hit Guillotine surfaced online, sparking social media bewilderment and causing The Quietus among others to speculate as to its provenance. In fact it turned out to be the first track from celebrity choirmaster Gareth Malone's new Voices project, a nationwide search for the country's most talented young singers to form a 'next-generation' choir. The result - a sort of latter-day Langley Schools Music Project - is actually rather beautiful, as this unearthly version of Bon Iver's Calgary shows. Voices blends lush choral textures with the innovative production you would expect of producer David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything, Guillemots), making it a much more compelling prospect than the choir-sings-pop-hits event it might have been, while guest appearances from Lianne La Havas, Amber Le Bon and Fyfe Dangerfield add additional flavour. The Voices choir will tour the UK in May and June 2014, dates TBC.
