Espa
WE SAY
Espa is an artist that hugely impressed us last autumn with the excellent Swan Song. We turned the spotlight on that Giggs-featured track back in October and it went on to be championed early on by Annie Mac as well as become a huge favourite at Radio 1Xtra. Now she returns with her first single release of 2016, and it’s even more special. Co-wrtitten by Todd Oliver and co-produced with her long-time collaborators Tim ‘The Dealer’ Deal and John Calvert, it sees her move firmly into classy mainstream R&B territory that shifts her away from her darker side musically. Lyrically the song tells of the frustrating breakdown in communications as a relationship draws to a close and the controlled rage of the chorus sees her let rip, but in a fabulously soulful way. We mentioned before that she studied jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and it’s clear that background has helped shape and influence her work to date, even though this is a proper accessible daytime pop smash that you can imagine any number of global R&B divas wanting to get their hands on. A big summer anthem.
