When It Was Dark
Elli Ingram
WE SAY
Sassy and soulful but with a satisfying bite too, 20-year-old Elli Ingram hails from Brighton, and this debut major-label release shows great promise ahead of an album later in the year. She first came to our attention doing hip hop covers on YouTube from favourites like Kanye, Jay Z and Kendrick Lamar, but things have moved on leaps and bounds since then. The video for this track is a richly dark and supremely stylish affair, full of religious imagery, under the direction of Emil Nava, who's going to be consulting on the entire visual look of the project. You might recognise Elli's voice too from the Chase & Status track Heaven Knows, which alerted her to the ears of Nick Huggett and Ben Scarr, the fellas that are now A&Ring her. With their pedigree looking after the likes of Adele, Dizzee and Devlin amongst others, you can see where they're going with this project. Next Tuesday (11) there's a hometown gig at Brighton's Bermuda Triangle followed by a performance at Islington's Old Queen's Head on Wednesday 12. She says her biggest influence would have to be Amy Winehouse. It seems the torch is well and truly being passed on here as the much-trumpeted UK nu-soul movement really gathers pace.
