History Eraser
Courtney Barnett
Marathon Artists/House Anxiety
WE SAY
Hearing Courtney Barnett's conversational and tangential Aussie delivery for the first time felt a little like that profound conviction, slightly the worse for wear in conversation with a stranger at a house party, that you have just met your new best friend. We just, like, totally connected with the sketched suburban banalities of Avant Gardener in October, as did the NME, who made it no. 6 in their Top 50 tracks of 2013, and radio fans at 6Music, Xfm and Radio 1. Her debut album The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas is weird, witty and inventive, picking up breathless reviews from Pitchfork to Uncut to NME, who placed it in their Top 50 albums of the year. Like Avant Gardener, new single History Eraser is a joyous stream of consciousness, this time with a hooky chorus made all the sweeter for arising almost as an afterthought. 6Music added the track to the B-list this week, with across-the-board specialist love at Radio 1, Xfm and BBC London. Courtney arrives in the UK in February to headline an NME Awards Show, with further dates to be announced.
