CHAMPS
WE SAY
CHAMPS is another of our featured acts at The Great Escape that we think you should catch at Brighton's Blind Tiger venue this Saturday night (May 10) as part of the music festival. This fine track comes from their debut album Down Like Gold, released in February to critical acclaim. It's a pair of brothers who make this rather beautiful noise: Michael and David Champion hail from a tiny village on the southern coast of the Isle Of Wight called Niton near Ventnor. Many reviews, from the broadsheets to the quality end of the music monthly spectrum, have noted that great harmonies often are created from that strong sibling bond we've seen throughout pop's six-decade history and that we can now add these chaps to that illustrious list. You'll hear folky tinges to their sound, blended with the sort of great moments of elevation we used to get with early Arcade Fire. That'll be thanks to the amazing acoustics the boys get in their Studio Humbug, basically a metal-roofed water tower built in the 19th century and situated on the top floor of a regal house designed by Prince Albert, no less. Prepare yourself. You'll want to swim in their sound for several hours when you hear how lovely this is.
