With over 90m Spotify streams, California-based rapper Blueface has one of the hottest rap songs of the past decade with his latest release Thotiana. Initially released in June last year, the track has garnered significant momentum over the past month with Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, Soulja Boy, Tyga, YG and Young MA all releasing covers and remix versions, which have clocked up some serious numbers on socials and YouTube (Cardi B and YG versions have over 68m YouTube views between them). While influencers like Maya Jama, Diplo and Billie Eilish have helped propel the track's popularity here in the UK with video posts of them showing off their moves to his 'bustdown' dance on TikTok and Instagram. On Friday, Thotiana entered the Official Top 20 at No.15 as the highest charting indie release, having broken into Billboard’s Hot 100 chart Top 20 the week before. Currently sitting on BBC 1Xtra and Kiss Fresh playlists, the track has been played on Radio 1 by Annie Mac, Tiffany Calver, Diplo and DJ Target, praised by the likes of Fader, RWD, NME and UPROXX, as well as featuring on Spotify (Who We Be) and Apple Music (A-List: Hip Hop). It may have taken a bit time to build but it looks like the West Coast rapper has his first crossover hit, so if you haven't yet jumped onto the bandwagon, now's the time to do it.
