Next up on our Ones To Watch 2020 is the exciting 19 year old indie-pop sensation BENEE from Auckland, New Zealand. She first came to our attention with her breezy pop gem Soaked at the end of last year. It quickly became a breakout hit, reaching No.14 in her native country and drawing the attention of global tastemakers. From there she released her sumptuous Fire On Marzz EP, gaining the support of Apple Music with a New Artist of the Week accolade and editorial playlist support at Spotify (23 NMF), as well as praise from the likes of Billboard, Nylon, Wonderland, i-D, Idolator, and many more. Last month, she followed this up with the gorgeous Stella & Steve EP, which is full of more irresistible pop nuggets, including this dreamy number and the boppy Supalonely featuring Gus Dapperton. Her ability to craft memorable and slick earwormy melodies with hazy guitar licks and R&B beats have helped her to amass over 100m global streams and for us, make her one of the most exciting emerging indie-pop artists for 2020. She recently won four awards at the 2019 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, including Best Solo Artist, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Best Pop Artist and Single of the Year (for Soaked), and is currently supporting Conan Gray in the US. She returns to the UK next year for her only show (so far) at the Great Escape after two sold-out London shows (Waiting Rooms & Camden Assembly) earlier this year, so mark this down in your 2020 calendars as a must-see.
