I Forget Where We Were
Ben Howard
WE SAY
We first featured Ben Howard back in May 2011 when he was about to release his debut EP Old Pine and have supported him ever since. Three years on, it's safe to say the boy's done rather well. His second album (of which this is the title track) is due on October 20 and seems set to be one of the year's massive-selling albums. The admirable thing about it all is that he's built his career somewhat under the radar so far, but all that feels like it's about to change. Zane Lowe launched the track just over a week ago as his Hottest Record In The World at Radio 1 and many other presenters jumped on board soon after, combined with Xfm putting the track straight into rotation and Jo Whiley making it her Record Of The Week at Radio 2. It's a prime example of a true artist trying a different sound to what we might have expected from him but his loyal fanbase are happily following him for the journey, and its something we wish more artists had the balls to do. It's already made the Top 20 on iTunes in the UK despite not officially impacting for over a month yet. This morning he's announced a full UK tour just before Christmas, including a pair of gigs at Brixton Academy on December 10 & 11, likely to be triumphant and celebratory in equal measure. The word majestic gets bandied about these days a bit too often when describing music like this - the difference here is that it's the only way to describe the track. He deserves every plaudit that's inevitably coming to him.
