Hey Brother
Avicii
WE SAY
We probably aren't the first and almost certainly won't be the last to point out that the last time daytime Radio 1 rang to the sounds of 'country house' it referred to a single by Blur, not a brave new hybrid of musical styles by a Swedish DJ renowned more for house than hoedown. Greeted with mystification when he debuted Wake Me Up at Ultra in March, Avicii certainly seems to have had the last laugh; the track was one of the year's fastest-selling singles alongside Robin Thicke and Daft Punk, racking up over a million sales and going platinum in four weeks. Hey Brother, the third single to be taken from his no. 2 debut album True explores similar territory and looks set to repeat the success of its predecessor, the only impediment being that Wake Me Up doggedly refuses to exit the airplay chart. Added to the C-list at Radio 1 yesterday and - more significantly perhaps - to the B-list at Radio 2 (Capital and Kiss went five weeks out) it has risen to 11 on Shazam and topped 7m views on a lyric video alone. Avicii follows the release with a huge international tour in support of True, which passes through the UK (arena shows in London and Manchester) in February.
