Taylor Swift's eleventh album, “The Tortured Poets Department” (Universal Music), confirms its global success in Spain, leading 2024's sales charts. The album debuted at No. 1 during its release week and became the best-selling record in the country in 2024, also claiming the No. 1 position on the Top 100 Vinyls chart. This success allowed it to remain in the Top 100 Albums for 36 weeks, earning a PROMUSICAE Platinum® certification. Additionally, four other albums from the influential artist also made it to the Top 100 Albums: “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” “Midnights,” “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” and “Red (Taylor’s Version)”(all from Universal Music).
Another powerful woman, this time a Latin woman, took the No. 1 spot on the annual Top 100 Songs chart for 2024. Karol G's undisputed "song of the summer”, “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido” (Universal Music), earned a PROMUSICAE Eight-Time Platinum® certification (meaning over 480,000 units sold).
Meanwhile, the most-played song on Spanish radio in 2024 was “Beautiful Things” (Warner Music) by young American debut artist Benson Boone.
Data for 2024 compiled by GfK, a global leader in data and analytics, for PROMUSICAE (association which represents 95% of the Spanish music market) and AGEDI (the producers' rights collecting society), confirms that consumers are integrating recorded music into their daily lives through various audio streaming platforms.
Audio streaming consumption in 2024, including both premium subscriptions and ad-supported free tiers, again surpassed 2023 figures, reaching 98.5 billion listens across all digital streaming platforms compared to 87 billion the previous year. This significant growth aligns with the global music consumption report by IFPI, “Engaging with Music,” which reveals that music consumption in Spain is above average, (averaging 22.1 hours per week up from 20.9 hours in 2022). In song terms, Spaniards are now listening to over 260 million songs per day.
Streaming represented 90% of music consumption in 2024. Notably, paid subscription streaming saw a significant 11% increase, accounting for 57% of total audio streaming consumption. However, these figures still lag behind countries like France or the UK, where paid subscription rates reach 80%. This disparity explains why Spain's music market has not recovered to the same level as its European counterparts.
Based on the data presented, we can conclude that although Spain is in line with the per capita consumption data of the leading European countries, the result in terms of profitability from this consumption is reflected in lower revenues for the Spanish music industry due to the low subscription rate in Spain.
In terms of sales figures, digital consumption is equivalent to 30 million albums sold (physical or digital), a respectable figure but still far below the peak of 57 million albums sold in 2002.
Besides, the number of artists achieving significant streaming numbers also continues to grow in 2024, with 1,180 artists surpassing 10 million streams in Spain in 2024 (208 more than in 2023 and 905 more than in 2005). Of these, 70 artists are favourite of the public, exceeding 100 million streams (14 more than in 2023) of their songs.
A new milestone was reached in 2024 when, for the first time, over 2 billion streams were recorded in a single week—and this happened twice, during weeks 49 and 51, both in the Christmas holiday season.
Physical market data for 2024 confirms another year of growth for vinyl sales, with a 9% increase in units sold. However, overall physical format sales went down by 2% in 2024, a smaller decrease than in 2023.
Antonio Guisasola, President of PROMUSICAE, commented: "These figures confirm the robust health of recorded music and the public’s ongoing interest in it, supported by the increasing number of paid streaming subscriptions as well as the continued purchase of physical formats like vinyl, which shows the public’s commitment to engaging with their favorite artists' work.”
Guisasola added: "The wide variety of artists and record labels supporting these creations and bringing them to market and to their fans is excellent news. In an increasingly competitive and global environment, Spanish music continues to work towards achieving the recognition it deserves worldwide. Their successes are shown in the official annual charts we are publishing today, congratulations to all of them.”
Promusicae’s President also took the opportunity to “remind public authorities of the need to firmly support the production and investment made by Spanish record labels, so that the works of Spanish artists have the greatest opportunities for promotion and competitiveness in the current Spanish music ecosystem, where there are as many opportunities as challenges to face. It makes no sense that, to this day, the tax benefits enjoyed by the rest of the cultural industries have not been extended to recorded music."
The Best-Selling Albums of 2024
The annual charts published today are based on rigorous data collection throughout the year, incorporating weekly reports from 90% of physical retailers in Spain, as well as data from digital stores, audio streaming platforms, and, since 2022, views of music content on YouTube.
The 2024 Top 100 Albums chart highlights a wide range of genres, artists, and releases in sales charts in our country, showcasing 46 albums by Spanish artists among the best-sellers. Karol G's “Mañana Será Bonito” (Universal Music) holds the No. 2 spot for the second consecutive year, following its 2023 ranking, and leaves Quevedo's “Donde Quiero Estar” (Taste the Floor Records), the best-selling album of 2023, still in podium position with No. 3. At No. 4 is Saiko's “Sakura” (Saikoneta), while Bad Bunny’s “Un Verano Sin Ti” (Rimas Entertainment LLC), the best-selling album of 2022, rounds out the Top 5, demostrating the long lasting sales journey of the Portorrican’s work and how the streaming consumption model contributes to a sustained popularity over time.
In 2024, Spanish artists claimed the No. 1 spot on the weekly charts 27 times out of 52 weeks. Albums that topped the weekly sales charts include the following: “Desbarajuste Piramidal”(Warner Music) by El Último de la Fila, ¡Agua!” (Sony Music) by Chanel, “Operación Triunfo 2023: Lo Mejor” (Universal Music), “La Joia” (Universal Music) by Bad Gyal, “El Presente”(Warner Music) by Shinova, “Estopía” (Sony Music) by Estopa, “Bolsa Amarilla y Piedra Potente” (Universal Music/El Segell del PS) by Derby Motoreta’s Burrito Kachimba, “Sakura”(Saikoneta) by Saiko, which held No. 1 for two weeks; “Lo Mejor de Juanjo Bona” (Universal Music) by Juanjo Bona, “La Libreta Rosa” (Universal Music) by Chiara Oliver, “Éxtasis” (Must Producciones) by Edurne, “Supernova” (Warner Music) by Ralphie Choo; “Ejército de Salvación” (Warner Music) by Love of Lesbian, “El Club de los Soñadores” (Pies Records) byAntoñito Molina; “La Jauría” (Warner Music) by Dani Fernández, “Buenas Noches” (DQE Producciones) by Quevedo (held No. 1 for three weeks), “El Último Día de Nuestras Vidas”(Sony Music) by Dani Martín and closing the year “Todo Es Posible en Navidad” (Universal Music) by David Bisbal.
The power of Latin Music became evidente with the number of Latin artists dominating the Top100 album charts, with many reaching No. 1 at some point during the year. Notable names include Duki, Rauw Alejandro, Jhayco, Bad Bunny, Karol G, Omar Courtz, Dei V, and Eladio Carrión. In the full 2024 albums ranking, Karol G holds the No. 2 and No. 10 positions with “Mañana Será Bonito”and “Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season)” (both Universal Music). Bad Bunny appears at No. 5 and No. 6 with “Un Verano Sin Ti” and “Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana” (Rimas Entertainment). Other top entries include Shakira’s “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (Sony Music) at No. 14 and Dei V’s “¿Quién es Dei V?” (Under Water Music/Encore Recordings) at No. 16.
International music artists also made an impact, with Taylor Swift leading the pack. Billie Eilish's“Hit Me Hard and Soft” (Universal Music) closes the year at No. 11. Other notable 2024 releases in the Top 100 include: Eternal Sunshine” by Ariana Grande (Universal Music), “Radical Optimism” by Dua Lipa (Warner Music), “Short n’ Sweet” by Sabrina Carpenter (Universal Music), “Moon Music” by Coldplay (Warner Music); “Brat” by Charli XCX (Warner Music), “From Zero” by Linkin Park (Warner Music), “The Secret of Us” by Grace Abrams (Universal Music), “Cowboy Carter” by Beyoncé (Sony Music), “Songs of a Lost World” by The Cure (Universal Music).
2024 in Songs: we mostly listen to music in Spanish
The Top 100 Songs of 2024 confirms the undeniable dominance of Spanish-language music, with 94 tracks on the list. Among these, 46 songs by Spanish artists secured positions in the Top 100 singles.
At No. 1 is Karol G's “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido” (Universal Music), followed by “Luna”(Universal Music) by Feid/ATL Jacob, “X’clusivo” (Visonare Recordings LLC) by Gonzy, “La Falda” (One World Music) by Myke Towers, “Santa” (Sony Music) by Rvssian/Rauw Alejandro/Ayra Starr; “Potra Salvaje” (Ahoraluego) by Isabel Aaiún, “Gata Only” (Florymenor) by Florymenor/Cris MJ, “Badgyal” (Saikoneta) by Saiko/JC Reyes/Dei V, “Manos Rotas” (Maas)by Dellafuente/Morad and “La Bachata” (Sony Music) by Manuel Turizo, in positions from 2 to 10 of Top 100 Songs.
Vinyl Sales Keep Growing
Vinyl records continue to showcase a wide variety of albums, from new releases to timeless Classics entering the Top 100 Vinyls of 2024. Over half of the list features Spanish artists, with notable entries including: “Cowboys de la A3” (Sony Music) by Arde Bogotá, ranked No. 2 and holding No. 1 for five weeks; “El Último Día de Nuestras Vidas” (Sony Music) by Dani Martín, which reached No. 4 despite only four weeks of sales; “Motomami” (Sony Music) by Rosalía, a former No. 1 in 2022 and No. 2 in 2023, which held a respectable No. 6 position in its third year of sales; “Estopía” (Sony Music) by Estopa, at No. 10; “Se Nos Lleva el Aire” (El Dromedario Records) by Robe. From positions 17 to 20, the list features: “La Jauría” (Warner Music) by Dani Fernández, “Todo Es Posible en Navidad” (Universal Music) by David Bisbal, “La Ley Innata” (Warner Music) byExtremoduro and “GRX” (Universal Music) by Lola Índigo.
Music on the Radio
Radio airplay in 2024 continued to feature a strong representation of female artists, with nearly half of the Top 50 Radio Songs performed by women.
A standout is Ana Mena’s “Madrid City” (Sony Music), which not only secured the No. 3 annual position but also broke the record for most weeks at No. 1, with 14 out of 52 weeks at the top.
While Spanish pop and Anglo-Saxon music remain dominant on the airwaves, Latin rhythms are also present. However, urban sounds have a scant presence in radio playlists, despite enjoying massive popularity on streaming platforms,.
