Last night, The Other Songs Live in partnership with The Ivors Academy returned to the London Palladium for a spectacular evening celebrating some of the world’s greatest songwriters. An all-star line-up of songwriters and artists took to the stage for an evening of performances, interviews and storytelling. Highlights included Bernie Taupin, Cat Stevens, Gabriels, Max Richter, Celeste, Tom Odell, KAMILLE and many more. The event raised money for three music charities: The Ivors Academy Trust, The BRIT School and Nordoff & Robbins.
The evening opened with a message from country music star and pop culture icon Dolly Parton, who set the tone by sharing a message of solidarity for the songwriting community: “As songwriters we’ve got to all stick together, we’re like a little clan. We love to be able to tell our stories and tell the stories of people who aren’t able to tell them...thanks for including me in it”.
Hosted by The Other Songs’ Co-Founder Alastair Webber, some of the best songwriters in the business shared incredible stories into the origins of legendary songs, including Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”, Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy”, and some of Elton John’s biggest hits.
Bernie Taupin, one of the all-time greatest lyricists and winner of eight Ivor Novello Awards, took to the stage sharing intimate stories about his legendary songwriting partnership with Elton John.
“We came together not just because we were compatible, but because we had this absolute drive for music, and a love for every kind of music…everything we have ever done has been based on a love of music and a tolerance for every kind of music”.
Teasing an upcoming record, Bernie said: “Elton and I have an album coming out soon. I can’t say too much about it, but it’s all written and recorded…I think it will surprise a lot of people and hopefully excite a lot of people”.
He also spoke about their international hit “Your Song”, saying “It was written on the spur of the moment and we weren’t sure what it was going to be. The minute he sat down and wrote those immortal chords, we knew we had something special.”
Standout performances included a very special surprise appearance from Cat Stevens, who performed a duet of his beloved track "Father and Son" with Tom Odell. BRIT and Ivor Novello award-winning Odell also took the chance to play one of his own songs, moving the audience with a touching rendition of his mega hit “Another Love”.
In another highlight, Gabriels’ charismatic singer Jacob Lusk sang a stripped back version of Donna Summer’s classic "I Feel Love” following an interview with writer, Pete Bellotte. The legendary track was recently inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Cristobal Tapia de Veer, composer of the viral soundtrack for HBO’s hit TV show White Lotus, was joined by singers from the internationally renowned Capital Children’s Choir for a breathtaking performance of the show’s eerie theme. Meanwhile, renowned contemporary music composer Max Richter performed backed by a string quartet for a performance of “On the Nature of Daylight”.
German producer, Toby Gad, appeared alongside Angelina Jordan, Louisa Johnson, Marisha Wallace and Zach Abel to perform a string of his biggest hits, including "If I Were a Boy", "Who You Are", "Big Girls Don’t Cry" and "All of Me”.
The event also saw performances from award-winning UK vocalist Celeste, Little Mix collaborator KAMILLE andplatinum-selling songwriter Jin Jin. Chart-topping Irish singer-songwriter Cian Ducrot performed his hit “I’ll Be Waiting” with surprise choral guests joining in from amongst the audience. New York sibling band Infinity Song played a number of the best loved Elton John tracks and other appearances came from English songwriter Dyo, rising star Sam Wilkinson, American hitmaker Shelley Peiken, and rising stars Romaya and Hohnen Ford.
The event was made possible thanks to its crucial sponsorship partners: PRS for Music, Universal Music Publishing Group, TikTok, Warner Chappell, Concord Music Publishing, WME, Island Records, Tysers Live, and Kobalt Music.
