The 2024 Italian music market ends with an extremely positive balance, with significant data for streaming consumption and an important increase in the female presence in the annual Top of the Music charts by FIMI/GFK (including: physical, digital, audio streaming both premium and free, video streaming). In fact, it is a year that has seen important goals achieved thanks to a greater diversification of the musical offer - with the outcome, for example, of the rapprochement of pop at the highest positions of the different weekly podiums - and the increasingly central role of the Italian and international female artists.

The results of the charts: the urban confirmation and a new female advance
The FIMI-GFK annual charts (covering from December 29th 2023 to December 26th 2024) picture the year just ended with the following results:

  • Top 100 Albums & Compilation: Italian trapper Tony Effe wins with “Icon”, followed by the Neapolitan rapper Geolier in second position with “Dio lo sa” and by the female rapper Anna in third position with her debut album “Vera baddie”;
  • Top 100 Singles: Sanremese hit “Tuta Gold” by Mahmood conquers the first position while female rapper Rose Villain, with “Come un tuono” (feat. Guè), takes second place, confirming the growing female presence in the Italian music scene; the third position is for Geolier, with the song “I p ’me, tu p’ te”;
  • Top 20 CDs, Vinyls and Music Cassette: Italian rapper Kid Yugi conquers the throne with “I nomi del diavolo”, followed by Italian rapper Lazza with “Locura” and “The Tortured Poets Department” by Taylor Swift, demonstrating once again the global success of the female artists.

The promising data on the growing female protagonism in the Italian musical market - in addition to having been anticipated last month by Spotify Italy, which since 2021 recorded an increase of 110% of songs by Italian artists included in international editorial playlists - is moreover confirmed by the number of female artists in the 2024 Top 20 Album FIMI, which grew by 300% compared to the previous year.

Following this trend the young Anna emerged, who with her “Vera Baddie” in third place of the annual chart album interrupted the long years of absence from the annual podium by a female artist (the last time dates back to 2018) and with a total of 9 weeks in the first place in the weekly charts achieved the best result of the year for an artist at the top of the Italian charts.

In addition, the domain of the local repertoire also continues in 2024, which conquers 100% of the top ten Albums and Singles and covers 84% of the entire top 100 albums (+5% compared to 2023).

Certifications as the Italian market photography
2024 recorded a total of 1,749 certifications attributed in Italy, divided between 267 albums, 7 compilations and 1,475 singles - including a diamond, the maximum certification: since 2017 it did not happen for a single - testifying to the dynamism of the musical market, naturally guided from the streaming phenomenon, which marked important goals:

  • In 2024 the segment reached almost 95 billion streams, including Premium and Free equally divided with a little accent for the premium one, for a total growth of 31.1% compared to 2023;
  • In the last week of the year, the overall streaming volume exceeded 2 billion of weekly listening: it is a historical goal, since the billion threshold had been exceeded for the first time only in 2021;
  • Albums with over 10 million streaming (Premium + Free) were 923 in 2024 (+130 compared to 2023), against 142 albums with physical sales/downloads over 10,000 copies in 2013, confirming the profound change in the methods of music consumption during the last decade.

At the same time, the physical segment remains stable with its over 4.6 million units sold and continues to maintain its relevance with a growth of vinyls of 15.7% compared to 2023, and thus distributing the volumes of the formats:

  • 42.9% vinyl (almost 2 million sold),
  • 55.3% cd,
  • 1.7% music cassettes and other physical formats.

With constant growth of streaming alongside the resilience of the physical formats and a female advance marked in the Italian language driven charts, 2024 represented a key year for the Italian music business, tracing a route to an increasingly inclusive and innovative market.
