Italian Collecting SCF: Historic Decision on Performance Rights for AI-Created Titles

The New Position will be presented at Milan Music Week
A New Dashboard for In-Depth Analysis of Revenue Distribution
SCF, the Italian leading company in managing perfomance rights, announces its first official stance on works generated entirely by artificial intelligence: in line with the guidelines and the strategic vision of IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), of which it serves as the Italian collecting representative, SCF advocates for excluding all synthetic content produced autonomously and entirely by AI from its mandate.

“The rapid evolution of AI technology poses a complex challenge and requires a responsible and thoughtful response: our primary goal remains to protect the value and rights of human-created creative content and thereby preserve the intrinsic nature of the music industry,” says Mariano Fiorito, SCF’s General Director. “We believe that limiting the mandate for AI-generated works is a necessary step to ensure the integrity and sustainability of our sector, protecting the work of artists and record producers.”

An Analysis of the Decision at Milan Music Week
SCF will present this new position at the panel during the upcoming Milan Music Week, the annual event that brings together key players both from the Italian and international music industries.
The discussion, The AI Revolution in the Music Rights Market: Risks, Ethics, New Tools, scheduled for Tuesday, November 19 at 3:30 p.m. CET at the Dazio di Ponente at the Arco della Pace, will offer an in-depth analysis and dialogue on the role of AI in music production and its implications within the realm of performance rights.

The panel will provide an opportunity to discuss protection criteria for traditional repertoires and regulatory developments, highlighting SCF's commitment to safeguarding producers’ rights amid emerging technologies.

Panelists: Mariano Fiorito, SCF General Director; Luca Maino, SCF Head of Administration and Management Control; Eros Blanco, BMAT Head of Sales Operations; Paolo Marzano, Professor of Intellectual Property Law at LUISS University’s Faculty of Law. Moderator: Davide Poliani, journalist from Rockol.

Katalegale’s New Dashboard
In a sector increasingly driven by the strategic value of data, especially within the context of artificial intelligence, SCF continues to invest in enhancing management and access to information that supports the workflow of performance rights.

In order to support this vision, SCF has upgraded several features of Katalegale – its proprietary platform for associated record producers – which now offers a new dashboard for monitoring revenue distribution and catalog performance. With the new interface, producers can access a clear, transparent, and intuitive view of catalog performance, optimizing data management and facilitating strategic decision-making. Finally, the dashboard enables monitoring of individual track or album performance, helping to identify high-earning tracks and those that may benefit from additional promotion.
