IMPEL comment on the UK Government's AI policy and the Make It Fair campaign
28 February 2025 - Press releaseIMPEL CEO Sarah Williams: "IMPEL supports the Make it Fair Campaign. The UK is the world's No.2 in global export power. This not only reflects the contribution that music makes to the UK's economy but speaks volumes about UK music's cultural impact both at home and abroad. In political terms, this cultural impact translates to international soft power. In human terms, it reflects the UK's contribution to connection and community. Socially speaking, these elements are in short supply.
"The UK Government's proposed change to copyright law would be a huge misstep. It would lead to a zero-sum game that pits copyright, culture and creativity against tech and the race for economic growth. These things should not be seen as alternatives. They should be mutually reinforcing priorities that allow the UK to play a leading role in AI without sacrificing the prowess of cultural industries or the livelihoods of the creators without whom none of it is possible.
"Instead of changing the law to place an opt-out burden on the creators and the copyright industry, the UK Government should show global leadership and innovate. We call upon them to direct their political will towards supporting technical and commercial initiatives that enforce transparency, enable good actors in the AI space to license responsibly, and most importantly, support the creators and the industries behind UK's sought-after cultural output."
