You Go To My Head
We say
Now this is quite extraordinary. With a track that intrigued us on the very first play, Amy Syed has paid her dues as a successful backing vocalist working with the likes of Florence & The Machine and Bat For Lashes. Now the self-confessed jazz fan takes a Billie Holiday track that’s more than eight decades old and gives it a 2016 twist to make it sound fresh and contemporary. We weren’t familiar with the original but you probably wouldn’t recognise it now, even if you already were. The notable production from Ali Thynne sees chilled electro beats, pulsing dreamy synths and a luscious ‘other-worldy’ feel make way for mellow piano flourishes, then the whole thing ascends with crunching drum sounds into controlled chaos before dropping back to pure calm once more. She recently toured with LA-based visual artist Lawrence Rothman, as support to Jenny Lee from Warpaint and Little Dragon. Live dates in London are promised soon and we’re fascinated to see and hear how incredible this will sound when performed in public. For now, this is a stunning and exceptional solo introduction.
