Underwater
We say
It’s always great when a debut release from an as-yet-unsigned UK artist turns out to be as good as this. London-based RENÉ will impress you no end with this deliciously smooth track, not least because it’s also so very honest, emotional and raw lyrically. She describes her inner turmoil of both hating and loving the relationship she’s in. Then there’s that delicious voice that pulls you into her world, sounding almost like a combination of Gladys Knight and Toni Braxton. Immaculately produced by Ton Epoch (who’s current work with another British artist called Barli is getting specialist attention from Huw Stephens at Radio 1 right now), it’s a minimalist electronic yet soulful soundscape that they’ve created here, but one that sounds timeless in many ways, harking back to the vibe that was created by many of those ‘quiet storm’ late night R&B smashes that dominated radio around the world in the 80’s and 90’s. Already supported by the Saint Heron blog set up by Solange Knowles, this is bold and captivating, and we’re ready to stick with this girl for the long haul.
