High 'n' Dry
We say
Eleven months ago we first featured Laurie Nicoll, alias Basheba, with her track Dirty Love (Your Love). Since then she’s had a busy year as her profile continues to build. Hailing from north west London, she was one of 2014’s finalists in the MOBO UnSung contest last summer, was supported heavily by BBC Introducing as an Artist Of The Week on 1Xtra and released her debut EP Bad Friends Good Enemies, from where this track comes. There’s been love for her too from SBTV, AKA, Flava, MTV Base and Kiss FM. Influenced musically by the sounds she grew up with in the UK as well as being inspired by her mother’s Bajan roots, she offers a fresh new perspective on drum 'n' bass with a story to tell lyrically as she blends in strands of R&B, gospel and blues to it all. It adds a sweet and stylish edge to a genre that can often be dark and heavy in tone and, as a result, is all the better for it. She’s currently working on her debut album and hearing how assured and full of promise she is once again on this track, the rest of 2015 looks very bright indeed.
