Who's Lovin' Me Now?
We say
As a young music fan at school in Glasgow, Kerri Watt started singing and playing piano and pretty much always knew she wanted to pursue a career in music. After winning a place at Dana Point Theater School in California's Orange County for a year, aged 16, she then returned to the UK and ended up working in musical theatre. However, her heart wasn't really in it and, after learning to play the guitar, she gigged endlessly for more than two years, both in her home town and back in the States. That solid groundwork has laid the foundations for this accomplished EP, the first release on re-launched label 25 Hour Convenience Store, created by The Libertines drummer Gary Powell. He saw her perform and wisely offered her a deal on the spot. It's easy to hear why. There are a couple of chances to catch her live in London this month - firstly at The Borderline on September 15 at the record label launch party and then upstairs at The Garage at a free show to launch the EP itself on September 30. This is great big radio-friendly acoustic pop in the style of Sheryl Crow or KT Tunstall, instantly likeable with crisp, punchy production and an anthemic, soaring chorus. It's clear that she understands and appreciates the mechanics and key elements needed for a perfect pop song. Quite simply, this is a cracking debut.
